Supporting patients, staff and families at St Bartholomew’s Hospital

The Fund (Charity Number: 1211936) is a new charity formed to continue the work of two existing charities, The Voluntary Hospital of St Bartholomew and The Rahere Association. Our focus is on helping patients and staff at St Bartholomew’s Hospital at West Smithfield. We also have funds to help students at Queen Mary University of London Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

Our website tells you how we can help and how to apply for a grant, and it gives you more information about us.

How we help

Grants for patients, their families and carers

We help with small grants to patients, their families and carers where other resources are not available but where a big benefit can result. Find out more about the type of grants we offer, who is eligible and how to make an application here.

Grants for staff of St Bartholomew’s Hospital

Grants for education and training are available for staff at all levels and in all roles throughout the Hospital. We can also help staff members with welfare payments when emergencies arise.

The difference we’re making

Although the help we give is often small in cost, it can be big in impact. Here are some examples of the type of grants we make.

Small grants to patients make a big difference

“Thank you very much for the financial support you provided during my treatment. Your kindness and generosity made a difficult time much easier for me.”
“The money helped me pay for food and bills while I waited for benefits. It came just when I needed it most.”

Restoring the North Wing

In 2025 the Fund made a major grant to Barts Heritage towards the restoration of the North Wing at the Hospital, thereby unlocking a pioneering programme of activities that support health and wellbeing for the Hospital’s staff, patients and their visitors. See more here.

Working together to support every patient

We work closely with the Hospital’s staff and other charities to identify the needs of patients and their families. We cannot accept applications directly from patients; instead, ask the staff treating you or one of the charities named below to look at your case and consider making an application to us on your behalf.
  • Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre, Barts

Located on the ground floor of the West Wing, St Bartholomew's Hospital. The centre provides a free and confidential drop-in service for patients, family members, friends, and carers affected by cancer. Speak to one of Macmillan's Information Manager's or Support Workers who can assess whether a patient may be eligible for a grant and submit an application on their behalf.

  • Maggie's Centre, Barts

Maggie's is a cancer support charity based on the hospital grounds at St Bartholomew's Hospital. We are located in the courtyard of the hospital and we are the distinctive glass building in the corner between the North and East Wing.
Maggie's is a warm, welcoming space where you can meet people experiencing the same things you are, have a cup of tea and a moment of calm, join a support group or workshop, or get expert advice and support from one of our team, including our Benefits advisors.
Our Benefits advisors are here to let you know what benefits you are eligible for, support you with applications, explore grants, and other ways to support you practically during your treatment.
No appointment or referral is needed to access Maggie's, just come in, or give us a call.

  • Toynbee Hall

Toynbee Hall are a charity that provides vital support and works in partnership with local communities to tackle unfairness and ensure everyone has an equal chance to thrive. Toynbee Hall's dedicated advisors can offer benefits advice to cancer patients being treated at Barts via a referral from a Macmillan Support Worker. They can help assess whether a patient may be eligible for a grant and submit an application on their behalf.

  • St Joseph's Hospice

St Joseph's Hospice cares for and supports people affected by serious illness. St Joseph's Hospice's dedicated staff may assess whether those under their care who are, or have been, patients of St Bartholomew's Hospital may be eligible for a charitable grant and submit an application on their behalf.

  • Staff of St Bartholomew's Hospital

Any member of staff at St Bartholomew's Hospital, or member of staff at any other Barts Trust hospital, working with patients who are receiving any part of their care or treatment at St Bartholomew's Hospital can submit a grant application on the patient's behalf. We regularly receive applications from doctors, clinical nurse specialists, other allied health professionals and support workers.
