What sort of grants can we make for staff training?
We can provide support for course fees, conference attendance and associated travel and accommodation costs.
The more our Hospital staff are trained, the better the outcomes for patients, and the more fulfilling you will find your career. We recognise that NHS funding for vital education and training is increasingly squeezed and other support can be difficult to find. If you have exhausted all other sources of funding and can convince us of the benefits that will result for you and your patients, apply using the button below. We will also need to see support for what you want to do from your line manager or department head.
Who can apply?
All staff working or training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, at any level, can apply to us for help to further their careers and the care they give to patients.
Support for nurses’ education
If you are a nurse at SBH looking for a grant towards education or training, please email us in the first instance at [email protected] to let us know what you are looking for. Depending on your funding needs we may signpost you to make an application to the League of St Bartholomew’s Nurses rather than to The Fund. We are planning to provide funding to the League of Nurses Scholarship Fund to increase the provision for nurses’ education at Barts. (You must be a member of the League of Nurses to be eligible to apply for their Scholarship Fund – the membership fee is £20.) Many, if not all, of our grants for nurses’ education and training will therefore be made through the League’s Scholarship Fund which provides financial assistance with course fees and associated costs of study, for both professional and personal development. As a result, your funding request will benefit from the expert assessment of the League’s Scholarship Committee.
Applications must be made directly to the League. Further information about becoming a member of the League of Nurses, and how to apply for funding can be found on their website at: https://bartsleagueofnurses.org. We may continue to support a small number of requests for nurses’ education and training separately from the support we give to the League, so do get in touch with us by email if that might be appropriate.
Grants Policy
Read our Grants Policy to learn about the aims and principles we work to in awarding grants.
How to apply
If you are a member of staff at St Bartholomew’s Hospital seeking funding for education, training or conference attendance, please complete our online application form here.
If you are a nurse, please see the above section on ‘support for nurses’ education’.
Decision making
Once an application form has been submitted it will be circulated to a number of our Trustees who will consider the application and decide whether a grant can be awarded. They may come back with further questions before a decision can be made. We aim to make final decisions on grant applications within two weeks.
What sort of grants can we make for staff welfare?
We have some limited funds to help individual staff members in emergencies, where unexpected costs have arisen, perhaps due to illness or other family issues.
We do not have an online application form for staff seeking welfare grants. Instead, email [email protected] with a brief summary of your circumstances, why you are seeking a grant, and what the grant is needed for. All applications are considered in confidence.
Can members of staff apply for any other grants?
If a ward or department at Barts might benefit from the purchase of equipment or particular resources that would improve the wellbeing of staff and / or patients in that area, please get in touch.
Funds for the improvement of hospital facilities are limited but we have contributed towards the purchase of bereavement resources for children, crisis blankets for patients nearing the end of their life and the purchase of televisions and entertainment equipment for hospital day rooms, particularly to help improve the experience for long term in-patients and their families.
We have also offered grants towards the improvement of staff areas around the hospital through the purchase of new kitchen equipment or furniture.
Our trustees will want to know how the requested items will benefit patients and staff. We will only consider requests under this category where they have been refused by the Trust or are outside the limits of what the Trust can fund. We will require confirmation of this before approving any request.
We do not have an online application form for this type of request. Instead, please email [email protected] outlining your requirements and the associated costs.
