Grants made to patients
The Fund makes many grants to patients to support their wellbeing during treatment. We will consider applications for anything that might help support a patient where alternative sources of funding are not available. Here are some examples of patient grants and the impact they make.
A grant to purchase a new washing machine
“I can’t thank you enough. I have lung cancer as well as chronic kidney disease and heart disease and have been through chemotherapy. Up to now I have been taking our washing over the laundry. I also suffer from the side effects of chemotherapy, fatigue, shortness of breath to name just a couple of side effects so having a washing machine in the flat will be a godsend!”
Grants to help with travel expenses to and from hospital appointments
“I would like to express my thanksfor the very generous grant that has been awarded to me. This donation has helped with my travel costs and expenses immensely making the whole experience of travelling to and from hospital a lot easier at this difficult time I cannot thank you enough.”
“My Son was in the Cardiac Intensive Care unit at Barts for nearly a month…The past few months have been pretty traumatic for my family…The costs involved in travelling to the various hospitals was starting to make visits difficult. That’s where your donation came in. It was a miraculous intervention at just the right time. I can’t tell you what your gift meant to us as a family. The relief to be able get into hospital was almost overwhelming. I’d like to encourage you to keep doing what you’ve doing. Your gift alongside the amazing work of the hospital staff was something that my family will always be grateful for.”
“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generous grant. My mother is currently going through chemotherapy and having to make trips to the hospital several times a week. Your support will help with travel costs and has lifted a huge weight from our shoulders during an incredibly difficult time. It means so much to our family to know that there are people who care and are willing to help. We are deeply grateful for your kindness and generosity.”
Grants made to staff of SBH
Supporting staff development is a major focus for the Fund as other funding sources become scarce. Grants for education and training are available for staff at all levels and in all roles throughout the Hospital. Here are some examples of recent grants made to members of staff along with feedback.
Conference Attendance
“I wanted to thank you for the generous support from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Charitable Fund, which enabled me to attend the British Thoracic Oncology Group Annual Conference on 4th March.
Overall, the experience has been incredibly beneficial, not only in developing my own understanding but also in helping to raise the profile of our growing prehabilitation service on a broader platform. This would not have been possible without your support, and I am very grateful for the Fund’s contribution.”
Charles Ross, Exercise Physiotherapist, SBH
Please pass on my thanks to the Charitable Fund for supporting me to go to SCTS last month. It was such a valuable experience looking at the most up to date evidence for thoracic surgery and benchmarking our service against what other centres do in the UK. I have disseminated learning to my team so that we can continue to give high quality patient care to our thoracic patients.

Staff Welfare
We can also help staff members with welfare payments when emergencies arise. We have helped staff with the cost of travel to visit family overseas during an emergency. We have also helped with the purchase of white goods for a member of staff who had been unable to work for some time and was on a reduced income.
