Chairman
Martin is the chair of the Fund. For 40 years he practised as a solicitor in the City of London specialising in corporate law. He works closely with Lizzie Clark, our Executive Secretary, to advance the Fund’s charitable aims in helping patients and staff at the Hospital and promoting excellence among medical students at Queen Mary University of London. In his spare time he gardens in Norfolk.

Professor John Shepherd is a retired surgeon from St Bartholomew’s and the Royal Marsden Hospitals, previously Chairman of the Rahere Association at Barts and an ex-trustee of the Barts Charity and the British Gynaecological Cancer Society. His other interests include sailing and skiing with his grandchildren, when he is not watching cricket or at the opera.

Julian was a University Manager having worked initially at Edinburgh University Medical School and then University of London: St George’s, Institute of Neurology, Bart’s Medical College, Bart’s and The Royal London, Imperial College School of Medicine and The School of Pharmacy.
Among other roles he served as Secretary to the Conference of Metropolitan Deans and Director of Universities and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS), Chairman of the London Universities Purchasing Consortium (LUPC) and a Trustee of The Superannuation Arrangements of University of London (SAUL). He currently sits on two other medical related committees.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and the Royal Society of Medicine.

David was appointed Director of Nursing at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in August 2023.
An experienced member of hospital leadership team, David joined St Bartholomew’s in 2019 as associate director of nursing for the Barts Cancer Centre.
He was previously the senior nurse for Renal and Diabetes at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel and a lead clinical nurse specialist in Transplantation at the Royal Free Hospital.
His nursing career spans 30 years and holds a masters in Medical Ethics and Law – He has a dog called Henry!
Josephine Fay

Josephine is a Trustee of the Fund. She practised as a solicitor at Farrer & Co LLP for a number of years before moving into financial services. Josephine works closely with all board members and is passionate about promoting the Fund’s enormously valuable work. In her spare time, Josephine enjoys the theatre, Pilates and spending time with her miniature schnauzer, Winnie.
Jeffrey Gawler

Jeff trained at the Barts Medical College, and also at the Royal Brompton Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square.
He was a Consultant Neurologist at Barts and Clinical Director of the Departments of Neurology at both Barts and The Royal London Hospital.
Jeff is particularly interested in financial support for trainees in all aspects of medical care, and for patients with financial difficulties associated with their medical needs.
Away from medicine, Jeff’s pastimes include family, languages and literature, hiking and DIY.
Brenda Griffiths

Brenda trained at St Bartholomew’s Hospital School of Nursing and spent most of her clinical career in London. She was a Ward Sister at Barts, Senior Nurse Manager at Guys and she then joined the Occupational Health Unit at the Royal Free Hospital where she was Nurse Adviser for the Medical Students Health Service.She served as an Independent Member of Hertfordshire Police Authority and a Non-Executive Director of Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust. Brenda is a Freeman of the City of London, Founder and Foundation Past Master of The Worshipful Company of Nurses. Brenda chairs the Company’s associated charity – The Company of Nurses Charitable Trust.

Alison undertook her nurse training at Barts and is now retired. The last 10 years of her nursing career was as Director of Nursing at The Royal London Hospital and she is pleased to be able to utilise her nursing experience within The Fund. She is part of a small group of trustees who assess requests to support Barts patients, their relatives and carers, a key part of The Fund’s charitable aims.
Any spare time is taken up with singing and supporting a small Barts choir and orchestra and also enjoying spending time with friends, family and going on holiday!

Dr Edward Rowland OBE MD FRCP FESC FACC FBHRS has links with Barts going back almost 60 years. He trained at Barts, married a Barts nurse and 3 of his 4 children were born at the Hospital. He returned to work at Barts following his leadership role in creating the Barts Heart Centre in 2015 and that year he had the great honour of being appointed Medical Director of The Royal Hospital of St Bartholomew until 2022. His involvement with The Fund is particularly focused on supporting staff training and education. Opera is his passion.

Paul Singh brings extensive experience working at board level as an adviser, investor and entrepreneur. He has led and advised organisations on governance, commercial strategy and long-term sustainability, alongside senior civic roles in the City of London. Paul has a particular interest in the Fund’s work supporting patient care, staff wellbeing and innovation within the hospital community. Outside work, he enjoys language learning and cooking (usually together!), mentoring young professionals and exploring how technology can be used for social good.

Paul was a consultant physician at Barts, having held junior posts at the Hospital, but trained elsewhere. He was churchwarden at St Bartholomew the Less, the church within the Hospital, and now is associated with the parish of Great St Bartholomew. For many years he was secretary of a clergy charity and has always been interested in helping people who are less fortunate through no fault of their own. He is an active liveryman of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries and served on its Charity Committee. He continues to be an inveterate collector.
Rodger Whitelocke

Rodger has a long association with St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, having qualified at the Medical College and winning the Prize in Ophthalmology.
After ‘House’ jobs, including neurosurgery, he was awarded a PhD from University College London for research involving the role of ‘Prostaglandins in Inflammation’.
He subsequently undertook higher specialist training at Moorfields, before returning to Bart’s as Senior Registrar, and was subsequently appointed Consultant and a Clinical Director. He was elected Chairman of the Senior Staff Common Room, President of The Boat Club, and Master of The Fountain Club.
He was concurrently Consultant to The Royal Marsden Hospital, and Hon. Consultant to St. Luke’s Hospital for the Clergy.
He is a Liveryman of the City of London.
Lizzie Clark

Lizzie is the Executive Secretary for the Fund. She previously worked as the Secretary for The Voluntary Hospital of St Bartholomew and the Treasurer for The Rahere Association and has many years experience of working in administration and committee servicing for health and educational charities. Lizzie works closely with the Chairman and Trustees to support the management of the Fund’s activities. She is dedicated to the provision of direct support to those in need.
Julie Khovacs

Hospitaller
Julie is the Hospitaller at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and member of the Trust’s Chaplaincy Team. She attends our Trustee Board meetings as an observer and to report on what she sees around the Hospital, identifying areas of need where they arise.
Originally from the United States and born in Seattle, Washington, Julie moved to the UK in 2001.
Julie studied theology, cultural anthropology and chaplaincy and completed an MA in healthcare chaplaincy, alongside experience working in education, community care and for the church. Most recently she worked as associate vicar and ‘priest missioner’ for the Church of England.
This experience, alongside her 12 years in ordained ministry, shaped her understanding of spiritual and pastoral care and influenced her vocation which has equipped Julie for her role at Barts Health.
